Our
computer is made up of lots of different components like our
body. All of the components have different functions but all
of them need to function as a unit to be effective.
One
of those components is the hard drive. The hard drive serves
as the communication to the rest of the computer; making it
a very important component. The hard drive also serves as storage
for most of the computer’s information. This includes the operating
system and programs on your computer.
As
stated above, all components of a computer need to work together.
A fast CPU will be of no use if the hard drive is slow. This
is because the CPU will just be kept waiting of information
coming from the hard drive.
The
hard drive also serves as a place for you to store all your
files. If the hard drive goes boink, all the data you have will
be lost.
The
hard drive is the most likely computer component to fail. This
is because the hard drive has few components can be moved. It
can be able to store information because it has round discs
that stores it as 1’s and 0’s packed densely on the disc.
When
getting a hard drive you should first look at the technology.
Would you want an Intelligent Drive Electronics or SCSI? IDE
is the common interface for hard drives. This is easy to use
but also limited. SCSI on the other hand is faster, takes a
load of work form the CPU and allows multitasking better.
IDE
is what is usually used by home computer users. SCSI can be
used for home PC’s as well if you really want the best performance.
IDE over the years also has also gotten near to the speed levels
of SCSI. The price of an IDE is also cheaper.
There
is also a newer version called ATA. However ATA can only be
used on motherboards that can be compatible with it as well.
ATA has thinner cables and allow faster speeds.
If
you transfer a lot of data between computers, you may also want
a Fire wire hard drive.
In
terms of speed, one should look for revolutions per minute on
a hard drive. Faster rpms of hard drives means the disc will
spin faster and the access to that area will also be fast. The
most recommendable rpms are around 7200.
These
are only some of the important things that a person should learn
about hard drives. Hard drives, together with the other components
of the PC all work together as a unit to function properly.
